Title: Hope Raises No Dust
Author: [info]the_con_cept (Monopolizing the market :) )
Rating: R
Category: Snarry
Summary: Summary: Post-HBP, Severus and Harry come together again, learn to cope, look toward the future, and to hope. Title taken from a quotation by Paul Eluard.

It probably wouldn't be that difficult to write a little one-shot focusing on In-Character-Snape. It might be equally possible to write a little one-shot focusing on In-Character-Harry. But to write a little one-shot focusing on In-Character-Snarry is, as you know very well, virtually impossible. Because you need to see the hatred, the insults, the unwilling (if any) alliance, the eventual possessiveness and passion. You need to see Snape's brilliance and Harry's 'saving people thing'. In all honestly, how many one-shots like that have you read?
And yet, here is a one-shot. And you see it all. And it's astounding.

Author: AbstractConcept (aka [info]the_con_cept)
Category: Snarry
Rating: R?
Summary
: Severus leaps to conclusions, and Harry finds himself suffering from a bad case of the Snapes. In my never-ending quest to parody Snarry plot clichés, I target disabled!Harry.

I’m glad to announce that it looks like I’ve just been pointed to yet another little fic working like a cheering charm. It’s been ages since I gave up on trying to figure out how </a></b></a>[info]the_con_cept does it, it’s enough for me that I open a file as a very tired and pissed off person, and close it grinning from ear to ear. Just like here. So have a well deserved break from work, set aside the Snarry seriousness for a moment and check out ‘Challenged’ if you need a laugh. And I’m just sure you do. It's blasted midterm/autumn/no-holiday-time almost everywhere.

Title: 'Humour' , 'Melancholia' , 'Consanguinity'
Author: [info]tryfanstone
Category: Snarry
Rating: R
Summary: A few owls, some books, and rather a lot of cups of tea.

I don't know what it's like with you, but when I stay up late to finish reading a story despite having slept for only two hours the previous night, it usually means that the aforementioned story is worth something. So I beg you, don't be too hard on me today, I just want to make sure the word is spread about these treasures. Go and read the three pieces of art. They are outstanding. They are brilliant. They have a marvellous external perspective on Harry and Snape and depict Muggle/Wizardind coexistence in a funny and very skillful way. However, what's probably the most interesting: before you get to enjoy the third part, the first two will successfully scare the living daylights out of you. You know you want to feel that, you do :).

Morrighan

PS: That is another debt I owe to [info]ac1d6urn. I should probably start making a list...

A good story, dark and light, very sad and (almost) heartwarming.
Though sometimes there was too much left for my own imagination, sometimes I would have wished to be taken by the hand and lead through the story. sometimes I felt a little lost as in a world where a lot was going on and I missed some of the important events. It might well be my fault, I wasn't all that concentrated this afternoon - Sunday is family telephone day and I was interrupted at least twice while reading.
My mum just called (Sunday!), I make it short: A good fic, but a little too sophisticated for my taste - I'm a good down-to-earth girl.

Title: In Principia
Author: Vasaris, the Fuzzy Dragon
Category: Pre-slash.

Rating: probably R for „Darkness, death and damnation.”
Summary: What cost, fate?

A delicious, pardon the expression, mindfuck. A story you have to read to the last word in order to be able to form any opinion about. Dark and pessimistic, with a surprising touch of humour: Snape’s “Counterproductive in the extreme, my boy . [...] Sherbet lemon?” or Hermione’s “Pleased to meet you, Mr. Riddle” truly cracked me up (yes please, feel free to question my sanity - this is a dark fic after all). With its interesting concepts, a nice built-up of suspense, well shaped characters and good language „In Principia” manages to be different, original, remarkable. Just have a look.

Title: Down, You Lie Down Too
Author: Resonant
Rating: NC-17
Category: Snarry
Summary:  A brief interlude of peace.

Dark times, war, some fighting, suffering. As there's no one else, Harry and Snape turn to each other. - A concept, many great writers have tried their hands on - some with great success. But Resonant's fic is unique among them. Few words tell a whole story of war and loneliness and short peaceful interludes. And there are not many writers that manage to portray Snape so wonderfully snarky.
Maryx

A bunch of flowers to Maryx for reminding me about this fic. I read it ages ago and loved it. I'm always partial to those stories which tell the entire tale with a limited number of words and 'Down, You Lie Down Too' is one of the precious few masterpieces of the kind. Amazing work. Remember to read the sequels.

Title: Artemisia Absinthium
Author: Shiradine
Category: Gen (pre-slash? Only if you insist.)
Rating: M (whatever you make of it)
Summary:Snape has survived the war, surmounting aversity with customary aplomb. Lupin attempts to play den mother to the rest of the survivors and Snape is rather annoyed. Wit and vituperation ensue with a bit of SSHP slash on the side.

It is astounding how little recognition some truly well written fics sometimes get. "Artemisia Absinthium", also known as "Severus Snape’s Herbs -n- Things" ;), is a nicely thought out and plausible take on Harry's, Lupin's and Snape's lives after the war. Amazing in its attention to details (without being boring at that), witty and humorous, it surprises me with the accuracy of characterization and the general calmness of its tone. Calmness the more unexpected when you consider how often the peaceful (or apparently peaceful) lives are disturbed by interesting confrontations.
My quote of the day:

“You have to stir the potion every day between now and next Saturday? I bloody well hope not—the full moon is on Wednesday.”
A Good Fic. As simple as that.

Morrighan

What can I add to this review? Morrighan has said everything already. I loved that fic. It is a strange little thing, beautiful and a bit sad. If someone asked me what this story is about, I would have serious problems to recount it. It's about a dinner invitation, potions and research, though there is so much more behind it, and some of what is going on will always stay a mystery for us. Some days in the life of Harry, Remus and Snape years after the war, told in wonderful, poetic words.

Title: a line, a line, a lie, a line (you will)
Author: [info]happiestwhen
Category: Snarry
Rating: NC-17
Summary: A lie told often enough becomes the truth.

I’m guilty of walking away from the fandom for more and less serious reasons recently and I admit I still have a long list of some Incredibly Important Uni Stuff to do, however they will all have to wait a while longer as I have to start my redemption process.
Uhm, ‘redemption’ may actually not be the best word here, it’s an nc-17 fic we’re talking about after all, but try as I might to find a more innocent story to recommend today, Sioniann’s fic is stuck in my head for good.
The first thing I fell in love with was its title. I had the impression that a title like this could not shine above any work of poor quality and I was not disappointed. Then there were the little things: the heaviness of Snape’s cloak, Harry’s defiance, the hatred, the whispered name, the dream (was it?), the treason (same question); and the form, good heavens, the mesmerizing form of this piece of art was more than such a maniac of bracketing frames as myself could handle.
So forgive me for not delivering any list of novel-length, action-packed stories as I definitely should after such a long break. Read ‘a line, a line, a lie, a line (you will)’. Drink these words.

Title: Still Silence and Treasure
Author: [info]happiestwhen
Category: Snarry
Rating: NC-17
Summary:
The vault door clicks shut, a jagged sort of noise, and Harry knows he’s no longer alone.

Until now I haven't actually realized that when I read a Snape/Harry fic I usually picture them as equals. 'Still Silence and Treasure' is probably the first fic to make me so aware of the differences between Harry and Snape and the first one to remind me so strongly of the teacher/student relationship they once shared. Don't ask me why, I'm sure it's not something the author intended. And any philosophical thoughts I might have on the subject quickly died away when the closed space of the vault started to fill with hatred, repulsion, passion, lies and an ambiguous Snape, who at one moment expresses his absolute lack of care about Harry only to throw him out of harm's way mere seconds later.
I did not agree with the author on the Horcrux theory, but it was delivered in a deliciously intense and chilling way (oh, the looks!) and worked very well here. I loved the story’s ending, even despite the fact that it left me craving more.
An excellent post-HBP one-shot (just don't expect a tearful reunion :)). And very much on the NC-17 side. Be careful.
Morrighan

guest-starring: [info]ac1d6urn

I read this piece when it was first posted. It's an excellent example of writing in its genre. I would definitely classify it as PWP, Don't expect elaborate plotlines, except for, well, the ending. It's one of the best HBP-compatible works in this pairing that I've seen so far.
I've never read a fic set in a Gringotts vault before and have to admit, I loved her choice of location. For an NC-17 story under 5000 words Sioniann did a good job developing the backstory and making the encounter believable. I think I just found myself a new fic author to stalk. :)
Yes, like Morrighan, I did get the impression of Severus: still a teacher, a mentor, despite everything that happened.

Title: Milka M–joy Caramel Crunch Chocolate
Author: Kraft Foods
Rating: PG-13 (dangerous for kids!)
Category: Chocolate
Summary: Tender Milka alpine milk chocolate filled with Crunchy Caramel - a handy Snack for lunch and trips.

Milka chocolate, or the Mary-Sue of chocolates, is very creamy and therefore very sweet as it is. Adding caramel bits to it was pretty risky. Adding caramel bits hard like stones to it was a tremendous mistake. Customers are presented with a choice: either warm the product and get a safe, extremely sweet and messy sauce, or keep it cold and receive delicious chocolate with caramel that will most probably break their teeth. The producers claim that M–joy Caramel Crunch is ideal for lunch and journeys, which I simply cannot imagine considering the amount of caution that needs to be exercised while eating.
So keeping this note short: go ahead and enjoy your chocolate if you're a sugar- and/or dentists-lover; stay away if you value your time and darker tastes.
I am quite sure my little experiment with M–joy Caramel Crunch will keep me drinking black coffee for a while...

Title: Absolution
Author: Rushlight
Category: Snarry
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Snape is forced to make a difficult decision when Harry is captured by Death Eaters, and they both have to find a way to deal with the aftermath.

'Absolution' or Another Fic Which The Snarry World Needs To Be Reminded About.
Some people say it's disturbing, and well, yes, it should be, it does begin with a rape scene after all. However what those people need to remember is that this story does not focus on the darkness of the deed itself, but rather presents an admirable struggle to deal with it afterwards, the struggle not only of the victim, but also of the offender and the strength they both need to simply live on.
I suppose it may be wrong of me to find this story peaceful, but I do. I can't help thinking that in the place where innocence and dreams were lost, something greater and far more important came to life.

'Absolution' became my "story of hope" years ago. And it has not been replaced yet.
Morrighan

guest-starring: [info]ac1d6urn

I gave in and read Absolution last night.

The impression I was left with is: somewhat disturbing (which is a good thing, coming from me!), relatively well-written, thought-out work. Harry is believably in character, and so is Snape.

But -- and this part I couldn't get over no matter how hard I tried -- it is, in a nutshell, a 'victim falls in love with the rapist' tale.

The story started well enough, I believed Snape's reasoning and inner conflict (although I would've handled the fact that he enjoyed the act in a very different way if I were to write this plotline), I believed Harry's rather mature reaction, I believed the shock and the trauma in the aftermath of the rape and inwardly thanked Rushlight for an attempt to make it realistic. OFC didn't impress me but she didn't strike me as a Mary-Sue either.

Then the romance began, and progressed, and developed, and ended on a happy note.

That I could not accept, no matter how I tried. To me the possibility of romantic ending for them became impossible after the very first paragraph into the rape scene.

Don't get me wrong, it can be done. It will only take years and a novel-length three times as long to convince me that it can be done right. So far, only The Last Battlefield by Sushi came close to convincing me absolutely.

I can't help but feel that this storyline had such a potential to explore all the psychological aspects of the aftermath of a serious trauma, but unfortunately the plot idea was romantisized yet again. I can't help but feel that there were some parts -- very important parts of the story -- that were missing from the ending. The resolution of the conflict did not seem completed at all.

Usually my tastes are similar to SCHAL recommendations, but in this case, I had to check the link twice to make sure that I was reading the same story as the rest.

I'm still not completely sure of that, by the way.
The thing is, I liked Rushlight’s writing. But it’s twice as hard to see a story with the great potential that didn’t quite become everything it could be.
(*cringes* Ugh, don't kill me, please!)

Title: Canvas Kissing Fool
Author: [info]arachnethe2
Category:Snarry
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Deep down in the dungeons is a secret, Severus is keeping from everyone.

This is an excellent little story. I'm having a hard time trying to summarize this without giving the entire thing away. Suffice it to say this is an extremely interesting concept and it's very well-written, though there are a few minor grammar/punctuation mistakes. The tone is fairly light and that just adds to the overall story as said tone is slightly deceptive.  I wish I could say more, but that would mean giving it away and you really need to read it without being spoiled. In all, a great read.

A truly original idea, carried out very neatly. A touch of depression and sentimentality, though expressed in a surprisingly light language which helps create an interesting contrast. And beautiful. Heartwrenchingly beautiful.

Title: In Blood Only
Author: E.M. Snape
Category: Severitus
Rating: R
Summary: Snape is Harry's father. No one is happy to hear it.

Oh, I took guilty pleasure in reading this fic.

Just in case there is still someone who hasn't heard about it, let me say loud and clearly that "In Blood Only" is this very unique Severitus fic which turns the entire "Snape is Harry's father" idea upside down. Oh, he is Harry's father, all right, but while in all other fics the two of them eventually reach an understanding, here we are 39 chapters into the story and they only recently learnt how to merely tolerate each other. Not that they always succeed, mind.
Snape is an utter bastard, which usually makes me grin in delight. This time, however, I found myself yearning to slap him more than once. Hard. And then slap the (furious/brooding/ignorant/cheeky) brat Harry as well, for good measure.
I'm also willing to bet that it's not an uncommon reaction. I'm open to discussions :).

Morrighan

I pride myself to be the first one to have rec'ced this fic on FA (on the PRESTO rec list) (in case I'm wrong about it, would you please let me believe in my pioneer work instead of pointing out that the fic already had 200 reviews by the time I found it. Thanks, I appreciate your concern for my mental well-being.) But to be honest, I have not read a single chapter since. Since November. Chapter 10? I suppose I should have. I remember that Snape was nastily IC and Harry was bad-tempered. And he accomplished Occlumency because of the Cupboard. Yep, that was it. I suppose it's time for me to catch up with the fic and the rest of the fandom. I will do so after a bit of sleep and with a better blood/alcohol ratio.
Maryx

I'm such a wimp. I have a really hard time reading this story. Every chapter sits in my browser, sometimes for days, while I get up my courage to read it. That's not to say it isn't good, because it is. It's excellently written and Snape is very in character and extraordinarily ambiguous. One of the things that I love about it is the progression of Snape's feelings for Harry. It works so well and he's always so stunned when he realizes that what he's thinking is a parental response to something about Harry. What I don't like is the darkness of it as I'm not a huge fan of dark!fic. Harry starts exploring dark magic a bit in a bid to get revenge on Bellatrix and even Lucius and Snape encourages him in it to a certain degree. This makes me extremely uncomfortable at times. In all, a good read, but I don't like it... if that makes any sense.

Author: Natt(ish)
Category: Snarry
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Severus is tortured by his husband, Harry Potter, and their son on his and Harry's anniversary with gift exchange and puppies.
Warning: Hints of Mpreg

Severus Snape was being held hostage by a height-challenged man with over-large spectacles, a hyperactive toddler, and a puppy card. He should have stayed with Voldemort. At least he would be dead now.
Why should Snape suddenly become all soft and cuddly and nice only because he has children of his own? In 'Garments and Critters' Natt paints a wonderful portrait of  sarcastic Canon!Snape in the face of romantic anniversaries and cute congratulation cards. He's not happy with 'Potter' and 'the spawn'.

Title: On Sense and Sensibility
Author: Darth Stitch
Category: pre-Snarry
Rating: G+ (whatever that means - very tame though)
Summary: Harry comes out to his friends. Set in the As You Wish universe and told from the point of view of Hermione Granger. A Snarry pre-slash story.

Forget the universe surrounding this story, you can very well enjoy that one as a nice little entertaining stand-alone fic. No, I am wrong: Do not forget about the 'As you wish' universe, it is very enjoyable, especially if you are a 'Princess Bride' fan, but it is not essential for understanding our little fic here.
The basics: A coming-out story (there are by far not enough of them IMO). While watching 'Sense and Sensibility' Harry tells his friends the truth. Not everyone reacts as anticipated.
Some funny dialog, some Ron-teasing and quite a bit of Rickman adoration.

This immensely long, complicated and detailed review is dedicated to Morrighan, who will now enjoy her new DVD even more ;-)

Why, thank you! I am already enjoying my new DVD immensely, now I’m going to enjoy it far too much!
I really liked this little fic. Apart from being rather fond of those stories where wizards try to grasp the workings of particular Muggle devices, I greatly appreciate a piece of lighter reading from time to time, when I can sit back, relax and be sure that nothing dark and angsty will jump at me from around the corner. Fics of this kind are like pills for broodiness.

Title: Peripheral Vision
Author: Alexandra Dane
Category: Snarry
Rating: PG-13
Summary: As Severus had so often reminded him, the simple fact of both being unattached gay wizards who through no fault of their own happened to be sharing a very small living space and developing a kind of mutual dependency did not automatically make them either compatible or attractive to one another.

I shall attempt to overcome my speechlessness about this story and give a decent review.  First off, I cannot conceive why this story isn't far better known than it is.  It's absolutely lovely. This story takes place after the war with Voldemort ended with magic vanishing from everyone and blinding many wizards.  Much of that part is not explained and it is immaterial to the story and soon one gets so caught up in the dialogue that one forgets any confusion about what went on before this all began.  Both Harry and Severus are blind and end up sharing a room at a facility for the blinded wizards and witches.  The wizarding world is trying to pick up the pieces and integrate into the muggle world by establishing a school. A certain river in Egypt comes to mind while reading this, but not so much being in denial as being outwardly in denial. The progression of the story and the relationship between the two ties into this denial and is fantastic. There are all these little things that make it delightful.  One thing that struck me about it is the absolute lack of visual descriptions as both men are blind.  It was an excellent bit of writing as it forced the reader to imagine things the way that Harry and Severus experienced them.  Another thing is the thought of EnglishProfessor!Snape, which is positively stunning to me. In all, an excellent read.
-Nessi

This story has got everything I'm dedicated to in Snarry fics: it's post-Hogwarts, the magic is gone, Snape is of the "non-wizarding teacher" quality and there is no sunshine and roses even though the war is over. Furthermore, Harry and Severus are in a relationship of my favourite kind: as two unlikely allies, learning to cope with new developments and with each other. And when I thought the story could not get any better, the author puts W.H. Auden’s „Lullaby” in Snape’s mouth, thus earning my ultimate devotion. A beautiful, beautiful fic.
Morrighan

guest-starring: [info]ac1d6urn

It's been awhile since I read Peripheral Vision but I remember well how beautiful and well-written and strange this story is. So strange that it can easily be an original work but nonetheless I am thankful that it's an HP/SS fanfic. It's detailed, and peaceful, and seems so ordinary and yet shocking at the same time. It made me think, it made me smile, it made me worry and want a happy ending for these two. It drew me in and I was thrilled to witness these two find a bit of happiness together.

Who has never heard of Diana Williams? Hands up! *no fingers to be seen* I thought so. Who has never read any of her stories? *counts* One, two, three,... more than I had thought. Not even 'A Convenient Marriage' or 'The Courtship of Harry Potter'? May I ask why? *descents Snape-like on frightened SCHAL-lurker* So you are actually new to Snarry and you had so many good things about SCHAL, that came here and you like so well that you decided this would become your favourite lurk-out? *booms* You are lying! *calmer voice* But as it was a nice lie, you'll be forgiven. *glances around* And you, what about you? You are not of age yet? Really? And you are actually here in this dark of the Fandom instead of swooning over Tom Felton? Good Girl! You have the right priorities! *looks for more victims* You honestly want to tell me that you came to this site to read the chocolate recs? You do not care for Snarry at all? *grins menacingly* DETENTION! One thing, if you lie, then please try to be a bit more Slytherin.
So the rest of you has heard about Diana Williams and has read at least one or two of her fics? *rustling in the background when someone tries to sneak out*. They are good, aren't they? Well written, well plotted, good characterisations, believable character development and some sex. What else would one want?
Today I want take you to some of her older fics, pre-OotP even: 'A Better Offer' and its sequel 'The Unhappiest Potions Master on Earth'. They are well written, good plot and all that stuff, but above all they are both immensely funny. Ill-tempered Snape going to happy Disney World, sharing a suite with a Disney-happy Dumbledore who enjoys his time far too much. Hilarious.

Anyway, I'm going to forgive you this time as you reminded me of two fics I read and enjoyed some time ago. They are both very nicely written lighter stories with a fair dose of humour. The fangirly part of me especially loved Miss Stoner's reaction to the sight of a particular Potions Master in jacuzzi. Today I decided to come back to this older piece of classic literature, because if there are still people who haven't read it, they should definitely remedy the situation right away.
If I were to describe 'The Pandora Complex' with one word, it would be "hysterical". It's one of those precious few fics which I can re-read countless times, every time laughing like a maniac and attracting unnecessary attention. Why? Because Snape discovers fanfiction. And the world is coming to an end :). I won't go into further details here, I don't want to ruin your reading. Let me just assure the readers who are not very fond of Snarriness or NC-17 content that this story could be easily divided into two parts, the first one being totally innocent and still making tears of laughter run down your faces.

Summary: During the war, Harry and Severus look for a secret place to relieve their tension.

As the fic is only 530 words long, there is hardly anything I can say about it without spoiling its atmosphere or the general surprise.
So let me just assure you that 530 words was enough to convey all the passion and desperation of the story behind these words, and even more than I needed to fully understand the situation of two (involuntary?) lovers. A truly original and beautifully written piece.

There is not much I can add to Morrighan's wonderful review. I felt sad, sad because the fire is their only place, their only freedom in this world; sad because these encounter would be their only release, their only way to forget, the few moments in their lives not influenced by war and hatred.

Summary: The War has ended. Harry is alone and in pain. Funnily enough, so is Snape. Their hatred is strong. Some things can be stronger. HBP spoilers. Preslash? I'm not sure. You decide.

The emotions in this story are amazingly intense.  After the war ends, Harry becomes a hermit of sorts, cutting himself off from the world.  HBP Spoilers ) This story is told by Harry in the first person POV.  He's so conflicted.  He needs Snape even while he hates him and it tears him apart a bit.  The language is wonderful and I love the title of the story and how it fits with the text.  Excellent post-HBP story, just they way post-HBP stories should be.
-Nessi

I was so afraid of reading this fic. I often find it difficult to lose myself in a first person point of view and I had serious doubts about the sheer heaviness of the story at the beginning. As it turned out, all my fears were completely unfounded. What I received from the author was an original idea, wonderful language, lost joy, forgotten happiness, life full of despair, hatred and love so closely interwoven, and the bittersweet relationship between enemies/allies. An incredible read. Yet another proof that HBP was just a beginning.
