Title: Give and Take
Author: Merri-Todd Webster
Category: Snarry
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Harry learns that life and death are both a matter of give and take.

I had not planned on reading any fic tonight, I wanted to have a late dinner, polish my English translation, beta read and go to bed early. Sometimes life doesn't go the way we want it to. While I enjoyed my big salad with lamb's lettuce, dried tomatoes, greek cheese, mushrooms, olives and dried tomatoes with a wonderful honey-mustard dressing and a sprinkle of onion... ehm, well, I suppose that's more than you wanted to know about my eating habits. *is sorry* ...
Well, while I enjoyed my salad I had a look at my bookmarks and spontaneously decided to read this fic. It was a good decision.

Merri-Todd Webster needs only few scene to describes how Harry and Snape get themselves into a relationship, how Snape's hunger and Harry's insistence work together to build something neither of them might ever have imagined before. A good story, very much to the point.

Title: 'Humour' , 'Melancholia' , 'Consanguinity'
Author: [info]tryfanstone
Category: Snarry
Rating: R
Summary: A few owls, some books, and rather a lot of cups of tea.

I don't know what it's like with you, but when I stay up late to finish reading a story despite having slept for only two hours the previous night, it usually means that the aforementioned story is worth something. So I beg you, don't be too hard on me today, I just want to make sure the word is spread about these treasures. Go and read the three pieces of art. They are outstanding. They are brilliant. They have a marvellous external perspective on Harry and Snape and depict Muggle/Wizardind coexistence in a funny and very skillful way. However, what's probably the most interesting: before you get to enjoy the third part, the first two will successfully scare the living daylights out of you. You know you want to feel that, you do :).

Morrighan

PS: That is another debt I owe to [info]ac1d6urn. I should probably start making a list...

A good story, dark and light, very sad and (almost) heartwarming.
Though sometimes there was too much left for my own imagination, sometimes I would have wished to be taken by the hand and lead through the story. sometimes I felt a little lost as in a world where a lot was going on and I missed some of the important events. It might well be my fault, I wasn't all that concentrated this afternoon - Sunday is family telephone day and I was interrupted at least twice while reading.
My mum just called (Sunday!), I make it short: A good fic, but a little too sophisticated for my taste - I'm a good down-to-earth girl.

Author:
[info]gmth
Category: Snarry
Rating: NC-17 (what else?)
Summary:
Harry and Snape are easing into a relationship, but they have nothing in common... or do they?

One of the very few fics that are entirely from Snape's P.O.V.
What I loved most about it was the language, the way I could hear Snape talking while I was reading. [info]gmth is a real master when it comes to describing feelings, this strange melange of emotions and body reactions we all know, but we never manage to put in words.

My heart is twitching in a strange, arrhythmic pattern as the adrenaline courses through my system, the combination of an aching erection and knees that feel almost too weak to support my weight making it difficult to walk.

I can see myself here, I remember situations like this - only minus the erection, I have to admit.
Can't you?

Title: I Just Remembered - I'm Harry
Author: Sata Lisat
Rating: R
Category: Snarry
Summary: Harry's loved ones try to deal with the aftermath of his killing Voldemort. Slash. Written in Harry's POV.

Have you ever been to a psychiatric ward?
Have you ever seen how people you thought you knew suddenly live in a  parallel world only logical to them? Did you ever stand there helplessly in view of their actions? Did you cry for them when the medicines turned them into gibbering fools? Were you happy for them when they seemed better and devastated when they relapsed? And above all that hope that it might improve, desperation in the dark hours of the night and all the while the fear that they might hurt you, however unintentional.
That's how Ron and Hermione must feel. Their best friend is raving mad.

We
can relate to them, we can understand their pain. Poor Ron. Poor Hermione. To have to witness your best friend in this condition...

But how does this best friend feel about it?  Sata Lisat choses the hard way to tell the story, (s)he tells it from Harry's point of view. We leave the logical world that we know, to enter the parallel world in Harry's mind.

It is disturbing there. Sad. Confusing. And very enlightening.

I do not agree with every detail of this fic. Why is Harry allowed to take part in lessons where he can accidentally hurt his fellow students? What exactly is Snape's role? I find it bordering abuse. But this is such an unusual and brave fic that I encourage everybody to read it.

Title: Absolution
Author: Rushlight
Category: Snarry
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Snape is forced to make a difficult decision when Harry is captured by Death Eaters, and they both have to find a way to deal with the aftermath.

'Absolution' or Another Fic Which The Snarry World Needs To Be Reminded About.
Some people say it's disturbing, and well, yes, it should be, it does begin with a rape scene after all. However what those people need to remember is that this story does not focus on the darkness of the deed itself, but rather presents an admirable struggle to deal with it afterwards, the struggle not only of the victim, but also of the offender and the strength they both need to simply live on.
I suppose it may be wrong of me to find this story peaceful, but I do. I can't help thinking that in the place where innocence and dreams were lost, something greater and far more important came to life.

'Absolution' became my "story of hope" years ago. And it has not been replaced yet.
Morrighan

guest-starring: [info]ac1d6urn

I gave in and read Absolution last night.

The impression I was left with is: somewhat disturbing (which is a good thing, coming from me!), relatively well-written, thought-out work. Harry is believably in character, and so is Snape.

But -- and this part I couldn't get over no matter how hard I tried -- it is, in a nutshell, a 'victim falls in love with the rapist' tale.

The story started well enough, I believed Snape's reasoning and inner conflict (although I would've handled the fact that he enjoyed the act in a very different way if I were to write this plotline), I believed Harry's rather mature reaction, I believed the shock and the trauma in the aftermath of the rape and inwardly thanked Rushlight for an attempt to make it realistic. OFC didn't impress me but she didn't strike me as a Mary-Sue either.

Then the romance began, and progressed, and developed, and ended on a happy note.

That I could not accept, no matter how I tried. To me the possibility of romantic ending for them became impossible after the very first paragraph into the rape scene.

Don't get me wrong, it can be done. It will only take years and a novel-length three times as long to convince me that it can be done right. So far, only The Last Battlefield by Sushi came close to convincing me absolutely.

I can't help but feel that this storyline had such a potential to explore all the psychological aspects of the aftermath of a serious trauma, but unfortunately the plot idea was romantisized yet again. I can't help but feel that there were some parts -- very important parts of the story -- that were missing from the ending. The resolution of the conflict did not seem completed at all.

Usually my tastes are similar to SCHAL recommendations, but in this case, I had to check the link twice to make sure that I was reading the same story as the rest.

I'm still not completely sure of that, by the way.
The thing is, I liked Rushlight’s writing. But it’s twice as hard to see a story with the great potential that didn’t quite become everything it could be.
(*cringes* Ugh, don't kill me, please!)

Title: At the Heart of Things
Author: empathicsiren
Category: Snarry
Rating: R
Summary: HPSS slash. Written for hpfandom.com's "Famous Last Words" Competition. After being forced to bond five years ago, domestic tranquility does not reign in the Potter-Snape household. Thinking he's found something better, Severus leaves only to discover...

Warning: Mentions Mpreg

A nice and fluffy fic (as fluffy as Snarry can get without hugely OOC major characters). empathicsiren has a rather unique  take at the Harry/Snape dynamics. We see a very quiet, almost depressingly calm househusband Harry and as he is so uninstrusive, so low-key, he's hardly more than the background before which we see Snape's transformation.
I really liked the slow changes in Snape and the way he moves towards Harry, one step after the other, but every step a little more secure than the one before. It is not easy to describe a developement in such a slow pace without it being boring. You have before you one of the very positive examples.

Title: Peripheral Vision
Author: Alexandra Dane
Category: Snarry
Rating: PG-13
Summary: As Severus had so often reminded him, the simple fact of both being unattached gay wizards who through no fault of their own happened to be sharing a very small living space and developing a kind of mutual dependency did not automatically make them either compatible or attractive to one another.

I shall attempt to overcome my speechlessness about this story and give a decent review.  First off, I cannot conceive why this story isn't far better known than it is.  It's absolutely lovely. This story takes place after the war with Voldemort ended with magic vanishing from everyone and blinding many wizards.  Much of that part is not explained and it is immaterial to the story and soon one gets so caught up in the dialogue that one forgets any confusion about what went on before this all began.  Both Harry and Severus are blind and end up sharing a room at a facility for the blinded wizards and witches.  The wizarding world is trying to pick up the pieces and integrate into the muggle world by establishing a school. A certain river in Egypt comes to mind while reading this, but not so much being in denial as being outwardly in denial. The progression of the story and the relationship between the two ties into this denial and is fantastic. There are all these little things that make it delightful.  One thing that struck me about it is the absolute lack of visual descriptions as both men are blind.  It was an excellent bit of writing as it forced the reader to imagine things the way that Harry and Severus experienced them.  Another thing is the thought of EnglishProfessor!Snape, which is positively stunning to me. In all, an excellent read.
-Nessi

This story has got everything I'm dedicated to in Snarry fics: it's post-Hogwarts, the magic is gone, Snape is of the "non-wizarding teacher" quality and there is no sunshine and roses even though the war is over. Furthermore, Harry and Severus are in a relationship of my favourite kind: as two unlikely allies, learning to cope with new developments and with each other. And when I thought the story could not get any better, the author puts W.H. Auden’s „Lullaby” in Snape’s mouth, thus earning my ultimate devotion. A beautiful, beautiful fic.

It's been awhile since I read Peripheral Vision but I remember well how beautiful and well-written and strange this story is. So strange that it can easily be an original work but nonetheless I am thankful that it's an HP/SS fanfic. It's detailed, and peaceful, and seems so ordinary and yet shocking at the same time. It made me think, it made me smile, it made me worry and want a happy ending for these two. It drew me in and I was thrilled to witness these two find a bit of happiness together.

Severus Snape and the Happiest Place on Earth? What's wrong with this picture? Everything!

Who has never heard of Diana Williams? Hands up! *no fingers to be seen* I thought so. Who has never read any of her stories? *counts* One, two, three,... more than I had thought. Not even 'A Convenient Marriage' or 'The Courtship of Harry Potter'? May I ask why? *descents Snape-like on frightened SCHAL-lurker* So you are actually new to Snarry and you had so many good things about SCHAL, that came here and you like so well that you decided this would become your favourite lurk-out? *booms* You are lying! *calmer voice* But as it was a nice lie, you'll be forgiven. *glances around* And you, what about you? You are not of age yet? Really? And you are actually here in this dark of the Fandom instead of swooning over Tom Felton? Good Girl! You have the right priorities! *looks for more victims* You honestly want to tell me that you came to this site to read the chocolate recs? You do not care for Snarry at all? *grins menacingly* DETENTION! One thing, if you lie, then please try to be a bit more Slytherin.
So the rest of you has heard about Diana Williams and has read at least one or two of her fics? *rustling in the background when someone tries to sneak out*. They are good, aren't they? Well written, well plotted, good characterisations, believable character development and some sex. What else would one want?
Today I want take you to some of her older fics, pre-OotP even: 'A Better Offer' and its sequel 'The Unhappiest Potions Master on Earth'. They are well written, good plot and all that stuff, but above all they are both immensely funny. Ill-tempered Snape going to happy Disney World, sharing a suite with a Disney-happy Dumbledore who enjoys his time far too much. Hilarious.

Oh hell, Maryx! I'm actually intimidated here, for a while you made me feel like a child stealing a cookie :). I swear I love Diana, I really do! Anyway, I'm going to forgive you this time as you reminded me of two fics I read and enjoyed some time ago. They are both very nicely written lighter stories with a fair dose of humour. The fangirly part of me especially loved Miss Stoner's reaction to the sight of a particular Potions Master in jacuzzi. And when I think of Snape trapped in a lift... :) On a different note: I was surprised to remember the "Harry, let me kill him" bits. Strangly accurate :).

Today I decided to come back to this older piece of classic literature, because if there are still people who haven't read it, they should definitely remedy the situation right away.
If I were to describe 'The Pandora Complex' with one word, it would be "hysterical". It's one of those precious few fics which I can re-read countless times, every time laughing like a maniac and attracting unnecessary attention. Why? Because Snape discovers fanfiction. And the world is coming to an end :). I won't go into further details here, I don't want to ruin your reading. Let me just assure the readers who are not very fond of Snarriness or NC-17 content that this story could be easily divided into two parts, the first one being totally innocent and still making tears of laughter run down your faces.
All in all, a very enjoyable read.

Title: Anybody Else
Author: [info]dementordelta
Categoryy: Snarry
Rating: NC-17
Summary: None given.

Notice: Password required.

I feel really weird recommending another story written by Dementor Delta, but I'm afraid this is not something that can be avoided ;).
And what is it this time? I'll tell you what: it's lots and lots of Parseltongue (are you running to read it yet?) and Snape-Harry interactions, wrapped up in Delta's usual gentle humour, accurate characterization, fantastic dialogue and, as a bonus, a touch of mystery and history. All in all, an interesting and most appreciated break from the jumping-straight-to-bed fics. But I won't tell you more. Have a look.

Morrighan

I loved this story. Delta once again proves that she is a master of Snarry. I enjoyed how the title repeated throughout the story in a clever way. I also really liked the progression of the relationship between Harry and Severus. I've found that by and large I enjoy a slow build-up and this had it. One of the major parts of both character development and the development of the relationship is left a mystery for quite a while, making the revelation that much more powerful. Their first kiss was chill-inducing and I have to say that the sex was some of the hottest that Delta has written. Delta also utilizes Parseltongue here in a very interesting way, which is always fun (especially with Delta). In all, a wonderful story that's leaves one feeling quite satisfied.

Title: A Taste of Liberty
Author: Lamardeuse
Rating: NC-17
Category: Snarry
Summary: Before the final battle, Harry Potter plays hooky and learns about another world.

I've just recced this story at FictionAlley and it took me a while to remember why it wasn't one of the first fics I recommended here... Now that I came to my senses, I can only say that 'A Taste of Liberty' was overlooked because I keep it in another file in my brain: in the 'so much different, still brilliant' file.
A crossover, ladies and gentlemen, with a TV show which I had never heard about before reading the fic. (*cough*I-didn't-know-the-fic-was-a-crossover-either*cough*). But apparently this knowledge is not crucial to understand the story :). It's filled with action, humour and great, maybe not Original but Borrowed Characters. The language leaves nothing to be desired, the characterization of Harry and Snape is perfect and the way they interact with each other simply priceless. 'A Taste of Liberty' is one of the few fics that I can read more than two times, but I'm not going to tell you everything and spoil the fun. Just read it.

Morrighan

I really love A Taste of Liberty.  If I recall correctly, it was one of the first Snarry fics that I read and I found it stunning.  The emotional journey that the characters take is stunning.  On that first read-through, I too had absolutely no idea that it was a cross-over, or at least I had no idea what it was a cross-over with (I could definitely tell that there was a lot of back-story on the characters that I was missing).  Lamardeuse does a good enough job with the Queer as Folk characters, that even when I thought them OCs, I still felt that the characters were compelling and added to the story.  Now that I actually know who Brian, Justin, Michael and Emmett are, it just enhances it all the more.  The relationship between Severus and Harry is beautiful to see as it progresses and Severus' reactions to Harry and the little things Harry does for him is perfect.  I really liked how she used Volanimus as a connecting plot device throughout the story.  Really, A Taste of Liberty can be summed up with this line spoken by Harry, "I also know that nothing good happens in this life unless you do something ot bring it about."

Title: The Care of Infants
Author: [info]stellahobbit
Category: Snarry
Rating: NC-17
Summary: A curse from Voldemort regresses Harry to infancy. Snape must protect him while the Order tries to find a way to reverse the spell.

In a suite of carefully selected scences we witness Harry growing up under the supervision of a reluctantly fatherly Snape. We see them bonding over paintings and police games, milk and memories.
We see how Snape slowly comes to accept and respect Harry as a person and how Harry looks up to him as a role model, a person to be admired.
And it is
[info]stellahobbit's greatest achievement that she  manages to turn this father-son relationship into a relationship of lovers, very convincing and not the least incestuous.
I loved the characterisation of Harry, especially the way he acts and speaks like a real child in this fic.
A nice, well-written story that I would recommend to everyone that has an hour to spare. (It's only novella length).

Maryx

Stellahobbit deserves commendation, if nothing else for managing to write this story without making it completely odd and squicky, which with the general plot, it definitely had the potential to be.  Instead, she made it seem like an almost logical progression.  I think she accomplishes this by never having Severus actually be 'dad' to Harry.  Harry never thinks of Severus as a family member, just as the person taking care of him.  I still find myself a little bit uncomfortable with the concept, but it works well here.

She has some wonderfully funny lines all delivered with Snape's dry, sarcastic wit.  The characterization of Severus is perfect and the progression of their relationship is quite interesting.  I really like how Severus never tells Harry how he feels about him, but how very apparent it is, especially in the end.  In all, a good read with superb writing by Stellahobbit.

Summary: Books, few owls and very little magic. (One-Shot)

If you've read and enjoyed 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff, you will definitely enjoy Fly-Fishing for Beginners.  I honestly cannot believe that I hadn't heard of, or read it before now.  This lovely story is filled with literary allusions and references.  Jay's narrative style is superb and fits the story perfectly.  The point of view switches between Harry and Severus, but I did not find the switches to be either confusing or jarring.  The story is addressed to the reader, which is not something one finds often and I found it refreshing.  I love Harry's attempt at subtle seduction and how he gives up when he perceives that it's not working and just asks for what he wants.  This story is witty, well-written, and one of the best short Snarry one-shots that I've read.

I can't believe I missed this story. How can such a little gem sit somewhere out there unnoticed?!? This piece is original, its style and language are exquisite, and it reminds me why I feel like a child in a sweet shop every time I enter a library. I loved the literary allusions and the interesting change of perspective: for once, we leave the past behind and meet two adult people who share a passion. And it works very well. So well, that I want to read more stories by Jay Tryfanstone. More, and more, and more...

When I’m in the mood for something well thought-out, light-hearted, and humorous I reread Fly-Fishing for Beginners. It never fails to make me smile. There’s something very charming and effective about Jay Tryfanstone’s writing style, with her subtle, quirky humour and all the little details provided in parentheses. The story's bright, relaxed atmosphere should clash horribly with the pairing, with the characters, but somehow it doesn’t: it fits them perfectly instead. Jay’s Snape and Harry deserve a break, a getaway, and they find it at last in a quiet Muggle town, a few good books, and each other.
"We'll learn." Snape said, and believed it.
I believed it as well.

Title: Severus and the Crup
Author: Josan
Rating: NC-17
Category: Snarry
Summary: What happens when a man meets a dog.

Imagine you’re born a witch or a wizard, grow up in a house like The Burrow, go to Hogwarts, then work at the Ministry of Magic, St. Mungo’s or a magical school. Not that difficult, is it? And now imagine that you’re over 20, or 30, and suddenly all magic is gone. What does your life look like from now on?
‘Severus and the Crup’ is a story which not only tries to answer this question. It is a story of unexpected allies, of people who find solace in each other, of people who don’t give up, who fight against their worst fears.
Beautifully written, amazingly gentle and perfect for those who don’t like descriptive sex scenes. Josan’s style makes you sympathize with Severus and Harry, cry with them, struggle with them and celebrate with them.
I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about the thematic difference between the first and the second part of this story. I have an impression that the fic would be twice as good if it had been divided into two parts: the main story and its sequel. But besides that, ‘Severus and the Crup’ is a marvellous read.

Morrighan

PS: Had this Journal been devoted to SS/OC, I’d be probably recommending ‘A Gift of Light’ next (*hint, hint*).

Severus and the Crup is an enchanting storyJosan's characterizations are excellent.  Her Harry and Severus are fabulous, but whenever I read the story I'm always struck by her Lucuis Malfoy.  He is a completely manipulative bastard and yet Josan also shows a tender side to him which I found fascinating.  I adored Severus reactions to Harry and Toby.  I love how even though he felt betrayed and angry, he still couldn't bring himself to send Harry away as he had gotten used to having companionship.  I loved how their relationship evolved and I really enjoyed the plot, which was quite unique.  In all, a wonderful read.  The tone of the story was really captivating.  This story is definitely in my 'Favorite Stories' folder for a reason.

Title: Pariah
Author: Aucta Sinistra
Rating: PG
Category: Snarry

Summary: Snape pursues Harry.

There is no story ever written by Aucta Sinistra which would be even slightly disappointing. The reason I’m here to rec ‘Pariah’ is not because it’s the best of them (it’s truly impossible to say which one is), but probably because it’s so unique.
Several things strike me about this piece: how old Harry seems to be so shortly after Hogwarts, how Snape can be both bitter and compassionate at the same time, and how nothing is sweet and lovely for the two of them, even if the war is over. But above everything else: I’m amazed by the fact that the author dared to risk introducing so many original characters and telling the story from an external point of view. This mixture can really fail spectacularly. Yet here, it couldn’t work better.

Morrighan

I have a weakness for love letters.  I own a book called The 50 Greatest Love Letters of All Time  which I re-read periodically just to soak in the beauty of them.  Aucta Sinistra's Pariah contains some love letters that are just as (if not more) beautiful than the ones in the book.  Aucta has proved that the art of letter writing is most definitely alive and well.  As much as I adore the letters in Pariah, there are other things about it that I like.  I really enjoyed the point of view and I loved the OC, Martin.  The characterizations were excellent.  Harry was appropriately guilty and bitter and Snape was intense and a bit of a bastard (though amazingly tender at moments).  Now if only I could get somebody to write me a letter like Severus writes a letter...

Nessime

guest-starring: [info]ac1d6urn

Pariah doesn’t emphasise a lot of things that I look for in this pairing. It doesn’t emphasise the arguments, the clash of personalities, the conflict between two very strong characters each stubborn and controlling in their own ways.
Don’t get me wrong, the story has all that too, plenty of it. Aucta Sinistra keeps her Harry and her Snape very much in character. But when I think of Pariah, first of all I think of two people, broken and damaged and incomplete trying to help each other get better.
And there is something very true and accurate about such characterisation of these two men.
I absolutely believed the idea that Aucta Sinistra tried to convey in this story. It's a rather simple one. If Harry reads Snape’s words written on paper without the name attached to it, without automatically discarding them as false just because of that name, he would grow to think very differently of Snape very soon. After all HP:HBP used a similar plot twist as Pariah, and who am I to argue with canon?
“Sometimes - just once in a while - will you write me a letter?”
Yes! That made me believe.

Title: Dumbledore's Folly
Author: DementorDelta
Category: Snarry
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Snape courts Harry.

In this post-Hogwarts fic by DementorDelta, we see an intriguing twist on the typical courtship plot.  Delta's characterizations are superb.  The characters are all exactly how I would imagine them to be at that age and the interaction between the them as mature adults is extremely well-done.  Harry is just jaded enough to remain believable after a war, while remaining enthusiastic and gracious and her Snape is wonderfully uncertain while remaining his usual caustic self for much of the story.  Delta's descriptions of the house that is the main setting for the story are fantastically vivid.  They allow one to picture the house almost exactly and greatly enhance the reading experience.  One of my favorite parts of the story is how the relationship between Severus and Harry progresses.  They make the move from being in a situation that both of them would much rather not be in, to affection so gradually and naturally that one can barely tell it's happening.  One aspect of Dumbledore's Folly that I especially appreciated was Delta's Fred and George Weasley.  She captured their interaction with each other and others perfectly.  When reading the parts including the twins I felt as if I was actually reading J.K. Rowling.  Apart from the moments with F&G, Delta uses humor quite effectively.  There were many moments that had me laughing aloud.  When Harry and Severus finally get around to having some intimate moments, they are extremely intense and absolutely beautiful.  In fact, I cried during a sexual scene for the first time ever in my experience of reading fan fiction.
Cheers! Nessime

Dumbledore's Folly is a very well written story. I found the beginning a bit rough, but at some point the story just grabs you and doesn't let you go. It is not a straight story (no pun intended) that brings you from one point to the next on the shortest way possible. Like in real life it sometimes meanders instead of taking the straight way.
I loved Dementor Delta's characterisation of Snape. She portrays him as an  introverted man, a man afraid of showing his feelings, afraid of being hurt, a feat many many writers attempt, but few succeed in.
I only found that the step between Harry accepting Snape and their first kiss was a bit sudden, it was not really convincing. What does he see in Snape? Why does he want him? There are so many better people out there! It would have been nice if Harry's reasons were a bit more obvious.
But that's just a very minor point. I loved this fic and I would advise everyone to read it.
